This study examines the effects of Tiv burial practices on the sustainable development of
Tiv land, Benue State, Nigeria, focusing on the evolution of burial customs and their
economic and environmental impacts. The research employed a mixed-methods approach,
including Key Informant Interviews (KII), in-depth interviews, structured interviews, and
Focus Group Discussions (FGD), to gather comprehensive data from various stakeholders.
Findings reveal a significant shift from traditional, economically and environmentally
sustainable burial practices to contemporary, elaborate, and costly ceremonies.
Traditional Tiv burial customs were characterized by simplicity and modest financial costs.
Practices included straightforward grave digging, natural corpse treatment, and minimal
ceremonial activities. These methods ensured minimal economic strain on families and
maintained environmental sustainability. In contrast, contemporary Tiv burial practices
have become financially burdensome, involving substantial expenses for coffins, grave
construction, mortuary bills, entertainment, and various ceremonial activities. These
practices often lead to severe economic hardships, including poverty and indebtedness.
Additionally, the use of non-biodegradable materials and extensive deforestation for grave
construction has resulted in significant environmental degradation. The study recommends
community education programs to raise awareness about the impacts of elaborate burial
practices, policy interventions to regulate burial expenditures, and cultural reorientation
to prioritize sustainable burial methods. Establishing community support systems to assist
families with affordable and environmentally friendly burials is also suggested.
