Type 2 Diabetes is one of the underlying illnesses that require lifelong treatment. It necessitates
adherence to a specific regimen, which includes lifestyle changes and dietary modifications, for
the maintenance of a healthy life. This study explored the experiences of people living with this
health condition who attends the Federal Medical Centre, Azare. A purposive sampling technique
was used to draw a sample of 20 participants for in-depth interviews and 3 participants for key
informant interviews, respectively. These methods provided insight into the experiences of patients
living with Type 2 diabetes. The study discovered that living with Type 2 diabetes is associated
with an array of psycho-social issues which affect the individual in many spheres and cause
feelings of distress and sometimes segregation. Additionally, socio-economic problems were found
to hinder proper adherence to good management practices among patients. However, empathy
and compassion from family members were found to alleviate the stress suffered by patients,
thereby enhancing family cohesion. The study established the utility of the Circumplex model in
explaining the intricacies as well as coping mechanisms of living with Type 2 diabetes. The study
recommended, among others, that tailored interventions should focus on addressing specific sub
groups, taking cognisance of cultural relativities.
