Abstract

This paper examines the role of credible elections in consolidating democracy in Nigeria. Adopting
the classical theory of democracy as its theoretical framework, the study aims to gain insight into
the dynamics of the country's electoral process. The paper utilizes secondary sources for data
collection. From the review and analysis, it is evident that credible elections in Nigeria have been
undermined by corruption, electoral violence, monetization, and a dependent electoral body.
Therefore, the paper recommends that the electoral body should be independent to conduct
elections in line with electoral laws and global best practices.
