Abstract

Arising from the increasing costs of governance, Jonathan administration inaugurated
Oransaye Committee in August 2011 to rationalize and restructure the ministries,
departments and agencies (MDAs), commissions and agencies of government to bring
down the governance costs in the country. The committee recommended the scrapping and
merging of some agencies to bring down the costs of governance. Twelve years after
Tinubu’s administration declared the government readiness to commence full
implementation of Oransaye report as a measure to reduce the increasing costs of
governance in Nigeria. Judging from the public opinion, Orosanye Report has attracted
far more opponents than its proponents. It is based on this that the study seeks to appraise
the viability of the implementation of Oransanye’s reports by the Tinubu’s administration.
The study adopted a qualitative research method with the use of secondary sources of data
and the data gathered were analyzed through content analysis. The study appraised the
viability of Oransaye report for reducing the cost of governance by Tinubu administration
and found that the average cost of governance in Nigeria is believed to rank among the
highest in the world. The study observes that for the cost of governance to be brought down,
all arms of government must make spirited efforts at reducing their running costs. The
study therefore proffers some recommendations for the seamless implementation of the
report for the realization of government objectives of reducing the governance costs in
Nigeria.
